Prelude to Millie Salmon

Welcome to the story of Millie Salmon.

Millie and her family have been bouncing around in my head for quite a while. As with many stories, she rose to the surface on a couple of occasions. I’d see something new and fun and wonder what Millie would think about in the situation. That would become a new chapter. A dozen or so times, and suddenly poof there’s a book. It’s a violently inefficient way to actually write, given how easy it is for the entire Salmon family to find themselves hanging out on the hard drive waiting for me to find the next interesting thing. Anyway, that’s done now, and I hope Millie is ready to meet you.

What’s been interesting is how Millie’s life and neighborhood and adventures have actually found their way into my life. Fortunately, we haven’t had any encounters with overzealous Colonels or obnoxious alien cults (you’ll see). But I get to spend a lot of time in my own thoughts, like Millie as she draws. And I’ve found that Millie’s reactions to things terrifying and complex has improved my reactions to things terrifying and complex.

That, and she’s found a nice niche in her neighborhood that I deeply envy. Working on that myself.

Thanks for reading. I hope you enjoy the story. And I look forward to hearing about whether Millie touches your life like she has mine.
